On The Job By Anita Bruzzese How To Protect Your Personal Brand When Your Companys Reputation Sucks
On the Job by Anita Bruzzese Helpful data and recommendation from America's favorite office columnist Monday, March 30, First off, fantastic publish! My contributions can be that AIG staff want to comprehend they canNOT repair their company's previous...however that firm does NOT stand for their OWN personal values. Always present yourself as your OWN model, not offshot from a corporate entity. Barbara, Hopefully, the lessons of Enron -- and now AIG -- might be constructive ones for many individuals. They will lastly understand that not solely is it well worth the effort to promote a private brand, however it's crucial. Thanks for your remark. Anita As all the time thanks for the thought stimulus. Makes for an interesting dialogue and unfortunately a problem that a couple of others are going to face - be it the largesse of an AIG or simply the shortage of forsight of a GM or Chrysler. I would think Rick Waggoner at GM goes to face a challenge or two at his subsequent set of interviews! Unfortunately for most the poor corporate model is going to taint the individual far more than the opposite means around. Dan talks a couple of private brand destroying a company brand - that would be in a very few cases the place the private model is the corporate model. Tips for those affected: 1. Build up a key achievements and strengths document that carries testimonials and endorsements from those outside of the tainted group. Suppliers, clients etc who thought you did a great job will probably carry extra weight than a reference from Jeffrey Skilling! Get those endorsements up on your LinkedIn and Naymz profiles too. 2. Identify your core values and ensure that you are projecting those clearly and strongly in your interactions with potential employers. Show that you simply stay your life by your own moral code not a companies values. It's nice to align your self with the company values and search for like minded companies - but it could only go so far - after all one of Enron's values was Honesty! three. In an interview draw the company group chart and talk in regards to the impacts and relationships you had there. Make it concerning the success and influence you had on folks, much less in regards to the affiliation with poor corporate decisions. Just my toonies worth Paul, Great ideas! I assume the key is that we have to understand that we must all the time be proactive in our profession management. Too many individuals waited until they have been laid off (or near it) before they started using LinkedIn, or attempting to community in different ways. It needs to be like on-going car maintenance -- if you neglect it too lengthy, you're going to find yourself with a very mess on your hands.

A Look at the Application Process Past, Present, and Future - Spark Hire
A Look at the Application Process Past, Present, and Future - Spark Hire The up-and-comer application process is an ever-changing procedure with regards to choosing the best ability for your business. Have you investigated your application procedure and how it has transformed from an earlier time, present, and future? Utilizations of the Past Ten to twenty years prior, it was genuinely standard for HR or staffing firms to just post an advertisement in the neighborhood paper and trust that the applications will begin streaming in through the mail. While sitting tight for the applications, a spotter would determinedly browse his rolodex, looking for the ideal competitor dependent on past notes. Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) were not as well known at this point and most scouts needed to depend on memory, while flipping through piles of resumes, applications, and notes. While this procedure carried out the responsibility in those days, WOW what a tedious and moderate procedure! Uses of the Present Fortunately, for dedicated selection representatives, Applicant Tracking Systems advanced into the industry. As time advanced, ATS's turned out to be further developed, permitting scouts to electronically post promotions and get applications legitimately through the ATS. Recruiters are likewise ready to carefully look through resumes and recently made notes for specific abilities or watchwords, instead of flipping through hundreds and several paper continue documents and rolodex notes. Likewise, work sheets, for example, Monster and CareerBuilder have become more popular. Not just carry out these responsibility sheets permit selection representatives to post work promotions and get applications by means of email or legitimately into their ATS, however they additionally have broad pursuit capacities, permitting spotters to look through resumes of employment searchers in their database. We should not overlook web based life and the extraordinary a long ways it has made in the selecting business in the last a few years. For the most part, everybody is via web-based networking media and this source has permitted enrollment specialists the chance to take advantage of the aloof competitor pool more than ever. Notwithstanding these changes, one of the most progressive has been video interviews. Still, genuinely new in the business, video meeting has been progressively developing in popularity. Not just would video be able to be utilized for live meetings, yet it is additionally being utilized instead of resumes (video resumes) just as an approach to at first screen competitors all through the application procedure by directing single direction interviews. During a single direction meet, an up-and-comer basically records their reactions to questions you have sent them. This permits you to outwardly see their reactions and replay as much varying. Uses of the Future With the expanding prominence and advances in innovation, uses of things to come will be increasingly virtual with less paper and structures. Video resumes will be seen all the more much of the time, and more organizations will grasp single direction and live video interviewing. Video has and will significantly build an organization's odds of recruiting the best ability by having the option to see and associate with a competitor right off the bat in the meeting process. likewise, video will assist with accelerating our application procedure by sparing beginning screening time and dispensing with up-and-comers at an early stage who don't meet the necessary ranges of abilities. Looking to the future, I accept that talk with applications and meeting will turn out to be much increasingly more extensive all through the application process. Just envision directing a video meet through an internet based life stage, or applicants posting their video resumes on their online networking profiles, just as on work sheets! The application procedure has radically changed throughout the years, with specific procedures coming up short or becoming dull with the changing of times. However, I accept that video is setting down deep roots and that we will be seeing considerably more of it later on for our application procedure. What do you think the fate of uses look like? Please share your contemplations beneath. Picture: Kritiya/BigStock.com

Report Pregnancy, Parental Leave Return to Work - what employers can do to better support parents
Report Pregnancy, Parental Leave Return to Work - what employers can do to better support parents Download My Copy When FlexCareers decided to undertake this research, I mentally prepared myself to have some difficult conversations. Id spent 12-months moderating our Facebook page, and running free career coaching sessions in our support group, so I knew that employers in Australia and New Zealand had a problem. What I didnt adequately prepare for was the number of women that reached out to me via phone and email, and openly shared their raw, and often very confronting, stories of workplace discrimination and bullying. 852 women and 132 men responded our FlexCareers survey, and hundreds more brave women reached out to us to share their experiences, many of whom have never returned to work because of how they were treated. As the #MeToo movement has again shown, many victims of harassment, bullying and discrimination never seek advice or support. Of the women that I spoke to, many only realised that a law had been broken months or years after the event, some were too traumatised to pursue the matter, and others feared that it would would harm their career, or simply did not believe anyone would listen. And its not just women that are affected. I spoke to one man whose employer refused to allow him to take his planned parental leave early, so that he could travel overseas to be with his partner and infant daughter, after their surrogate went into labour prematurely. He felt strongly that had he not been in a same-sex relationship, and it was his wife that had gone into labour, he would have been allowed leave without question. 65% said that their experience has put them off returning to, or remaining in, the workforce. But its not just bullying and discrimination thats an issue. Australia continues to lag behind other developed (and some less developed) countries when it comes to parental leave entitlements, and giving equal opportunities for all parents to be involved with raising their children. Our research shows that only half of employers in Australia and New Zealand offer any support to new parents over and above statutory obligations, and for those that do, many are missing simple steps they could take to improve employee experience, increase the number of parents returning from leave, and most importantly ensuring that this group of experienced, highly employable and talented people are not lost from our workforce forever. Employers need to do more to support their people, their most valuable assets, and ensure that they are able to continue on in their careers. We need to break through the quiet acceptance, the unspoken understanding that by having a child, your career will be put on hold, your earning potential reduced and your value to society limited to your role as chief nappy-changer. FlexCareers hope that by publishing this research together with feedback from some of our interviews, employers in Australia and New Zealand will understand the magnitude of the problem, and take urgent steps to address it. Jobscan explore found that 98% of Fortune 500 organizations use ATSwhile aKelly OCG review assessed 66% of enormous organizations and 35% of little associations depend on enlistment programming. Here are only a couple of the top ATS: TaleoWorkdaySuccessFactorsGreenhouseBrassringiCIMSJobviteLeverSmartRecruitersJazzHRCATSBambooHR In case you're applying to a huge association, odds are youll face an ATS. In the event that youre applying through any online structure, youre applying through an ATS. Indeed, even places of work like Indeed and LinkedIn have their own worked in ATS. 4. How candidate following frameworks work Candidate following frameworks gather and store continues in a database for employing experts to get to. Resumes may likewise be put away long after the first occupation you applied for is filled.Corporate scouts or employing administrators would then be able to look and sort through the resumes in various manners, contingent upon the framework they're utilizing. Numerous ATS parsing calculations are obsolete and unintelligent, making your resume data get contorted or lost. This implies indispensable watchwords or subtleties probably won't be imported. Envision your most significant capability becoming lost despite a general sense of vigilance! Current ATS are beginning to escape from this training, however some well known frameworks like iCIMS (utilized by Amazon, General Mills, Comcast) still do it. So as to make an ATS-accommodating resume that is parsable by these obsolete frameworks, make certain to keep area headings basic, utilize predictable organizing for your work history and dates, evade tables, and utilize a .docx or .pdf document group. 6. Instructions to beat candidate following frameworks There is no widespread stunt to beating candidate following frameworks. Moving beyond an ATS and getting a prospective employee meet-up requires an elegantly composed resume that is aware of ATS calculations just as the individuals pressing the catches. Heres our least difficult guidance for how to beat ATS: Cautiously tailor your resume to the expected set of responsibilities each and every time you apply. Enhance for ATS search and positioning calculations by coordinating your resume watchwords to the activity descriptionUse both the long-structure and abbreviation form of catchphrases (for example Ace of Business Administration (MBA) or Search Engine Optimization (SEO)) for most extreme searchabilityUse an ordered or half breed continue position (stay away from the practical resume format)Dont use tables or segments as they regularly cause major parsing errorsUse a customary resume textual style like Helvetica, Garamond, or GeorgiaDont use headers or footers as the data would get lost or cause a parsing errorUse standard resume segment headings like Work Experience as opposed to being charming or shrewd (Where Ive Been)Save your document as a .docx if conceivable 7. Try not to cheat or over-streamline for candidate following frameworks Streamlining your watchwords and organizing for candidate following frameworks isn't equivalent to duping the framework. In principle, you can deceive ATS calculations by stuffing your resume with watchwords. Some do this by covertly adding extra catchphrases to their resumes utilizing imperceptible white content or by unnaturally abusing watchwords. Full article: Are You Guilty of Resume Keyword Stuffing? These stunts may assist you with improving introductory score in the ATS, yet theyre improbable to trick selection representatives. Rather than getting yourself boycotted from the company, focus on creating the most ideal resume dependent on your genuine range of abilities. 8. Candidate following frameworks are setting down deep roots During the Great Recession, managers were overflowed with applications and needed highlights that debilitated and sifted through unfit applicants. This brought about a significant number of the enlarged application forms and unpredictable channels found in ATS today. Tragically, improving joblessness rates won't mark the finish of ATS. While obsolete frameworks are still being used at some huge organizations, we are seeing new ATS being created for the advanced age. As managers battle for the best ability, applicant experience is getting even more a need. Computerization and positioning frameworks aren't leaving; they're simply getting progressively specialized as selecting programming starts utilizing AI. An ATS-enhanced resume is the initial step to moving beyond the bots and eye to eye with a real person.Jobscan tests and looks into normal ATS to help work searchers stay away from the snares of these frameworks, from the obsolete to the front line. 6 Ways to Treat Your Time Like Money (And Reap the Benefits)
6 Ways to Treat Your Time Like Money (And Reap the Benefits) Time is cash, the familiar adage goes, for the most part said with expectation to spike one to activity, or reprimand a languid day of marathon watching and self-care. Yet, in the event that we really treated our time the manner in which we treat our cash as a thing of extraordinary worth that we exchange for the supporting and encouraging things of life - we may discover more an incentive in those inefficient periods. Life passes by rapidly - I can't accept we're now going into summer! furthermore, in contrast to cash, when it's spent, we can't effectively get a greater amount of it. In any case, we can be keen about how to oversee what we have. Here are six different ways we treat cash, and exercises we can take for how to regard time also! Contribute In case we're fortunate, we have a retirement plan through work, and consistently HR conveys an email helping us to remember this significant advantage, and how we ought to put resources into our future! Cash gets taken from our registers and contributed with accounts that, if all works out positively, will one day cover our tabs when we quit working from a certain point of view. The thought is that by surrendering a minimal expenditure now, we'll get considerably more back later when we need it. We can contribute our time for future returns, as well! I'm helped to remember one of my preferred statements from Gretchen Rubin, go delayed to go quick. She relates that when she's in a rush and attempts to hurry to complete things, unavoidably some misstep is made, or some mishap occurs, that will at that point cause more noteworthy postponements and moderate her down significantly more than she initially would have been. Rather, she says, go delayed to go quick. In case you're in a rush, that is an ideal opportunity to slowly inhale and be extra intentional. Slow down, ensure that you're not racing through and progressively at risk to thump something over, miss a stage, or overlook something significant. You might be a couple of moments behind, yet fare thee well, so it won't transform into 60 minutes! Another great standard is the brief principle. On the off chance that anything should be done that will take two minutes or less, do it now! Those little undertakings can accumulate, and monitoring everything that should be done can be a genuine channel on memory and focus, which eases back us down and takes consideration (read: TIME!) away from the remainder of our lives. Rather than letting little errands heap up, do what needs to be done now, or for a greater undertaking you've been lingering on, set a clock and take care of business for two minutes! Contributing a brief period in advance, spares us time over the long haul. Spare Sparing resembles contributing, however we're typically not hoping to get more than what we put in. We set huge objectives for our cash, regardless of whether it's to purchase a vehicle, own a home, or go in a major get-away, and afterward attempt to take care of a little at once until we have enough! Approaches to spare time may incorporate strategic scheduling or 4/10s at work, joining tasks, or in any event, going through cash to pay another person to take a few things off you plate. Huge numbers of us additionally have a bank of days, regardless of whether they are excursion days or PTO, that we accumulate every year. Similarly as monetary guidance cautions against leaving cash on the table by not exploiting boss match programs for retirement accounts, you shouldn't leave that time on the table either! Taking get-away is beneficial for you, useful for your activity, and useful for your time the executives! Regardless of whether you can't remove a long outing, you can take one day to a great extent to rest, energize, or simply deal with those bothering errands that are accumulating! Spare your time for an excursion, a side venture, or an exceptional day, yet ensure you do spend it! Spend The vast majority of us have a month to month financial plan, and regardless of whether we aren't truly following each dollar, we have a really smart thought of the amount we need to spend in every classification. The top classes are forever our non-debatable costs, which will incorporate some form of food, safe house, apparel, and transportation; everything else, including our valuable advanced cells, comes in optional to meeting those essential requirements for ourselves and our families. Clearly, for the greater part of us, investing energy at our business to pay for those necessities is non-debatable. Be that as it may, you may have more space for arrangement than you might suspect! Numerous associations currently offer some variant of strategic scheduling, or 4/10s, or you might have the option to telecommute one day (or increasingly!) seven days. Numerous Americans verge on work-aholism however, and those other basic needs get lost. Incorporate with your time spending plan an opportunity to make delectable and sound suppers, and transform your home into an inviting and agreeable home for yourself and your family. Take a day to cause those specialist's visits, to carry old garments to the gift place, and get the vehicle adjusted (that isn't only my plan for the day, right?). Late research on going through cash says that we're commonly more joyful on the off chance that we spend on encounters as opposed to stuff, and when we spend on others instead of on ourselves. I would contend that the equivalent is valid for time! Weariness has been recognized as a forerunner for misery, and the human mind wants oddity all the time. So invest your energy doing new things, investigating new places, and invest your time with the individuals who matter to you most. Continuously invest the energy to go to presentations, games, graduations, weddings, and memorial services. These are the large, significant occasions of our lives, and it makes a difference that the individuals who love us are there for them. Also, do invest energy in yourself as well! You burn through 99-pennies on an application or a bit of sweets, a ringtone or to download a book. You'll burn through $5 on a latte or a lipstick or to stream a film. Because. Locate what might be compared to a dollar in time, and treat yourself to those little minutes. Only one moment of profound breathing, or two minutes of reflection, can reestablish quiet and center to a furious day. Put your telephone on speaker and call your mother or your closest companion while you get things done. Tune in to a most loved book or web recording during your drive. Track your time or think back over your schedule and see where you can financial plan for those fundamental fixed costs. 10% to noble cause Most religions have some adaptation of the tithe, which is the necessity to give a specific level of your pay to noble cause. Similarly as significant, however, are your volunteer hours! Non-benefit associations can generally utilize some assistance, regardless of whether it is taking an interest in a network occasion, staffing a pledge drive, serving on a board, or legitimately working with those they serve. In many networks, a brisk online hunt will lead you to at any rate one volunteer help opportunity on some random end of the week. It's an extraordinary method to participate in new involvement in your friends and family, as well, on the off chance that you bring the family along! Escape obligation Practically we all have some obligation, regardless of whether it's a Mastercard, understudy advances, a vehicle installment, or home loan. It's generally remembered for our non-debatable spending things. We can owe time, as well. When was the last time you called your mother, or your closest companion? When was the last time you got a strong eight hours of rest? Or on the other hand got to exercise? Or on the other hand had a night out on the town? Call a sitter, go home early, money in a get-away day. This is your life, ensure you're living it! Duties That other well-known adage is that lone two things are sure throughout everyday life: passing and charges. In case you're ready to, register to cast a ballot, discover where your surveying place is, and go carry out your municipal responsibility! The main five second thoughts of those toward the finish of life reliably have to do with how they invested their energy, and we frequently have progressively decision and adaptability about how we spend this extremely valuable asset than we understand. Treating time like cash may not make us any less occupied, however it might well guide us to settling on the more by and by important decisions about where we spend it. - Kiyomi Appleton Gaines expounds on work, life, culture, and fantasies. How to Write a Resume For College
How to Write a Resume For CollegeEmployers at the career center UC Berkeley post a common question on their job postings: how to write a resume for college? A resume can be a written resume that is forwarded to potential employers or a one-page resume that is sent by email or hand-delivered to the interview.Everyone seems to have their own way of composing a resume, but the universal resume format and standard format make resumes easier to read and easier to compose. The universal resume template and standard format are built on the same principles of a professional resume. It is very easy to get your resume to look like the generic type of resume when there are templates available that will help you create an effective resume. One of the first things to do is to check out the career center in the UC Berkeley campus. You will need to be certified and admitted to the program you are applying to. When looking for the career center, check with the hiring office for their online resume po stings and find out if there are any company recruitment events happening in the area. This can be a great way to get some experience with the employer before they begin looking for a new employee. When you get to the career center, you will be given a small booklet that contains the basic information about the programs you want to apply to. Why We Feel Married to Our Jobs
Why We Feel Married to Our Jobs Its a phrase thats often used and with most of us spending at least a third of our day at work, its no wonder we sometimes feel that our day job is likened to a marriage minus the anniversary cards and presents, romance, and arguments. And in some extreme cases, our job has cost us a marriage. A new poll found that one in 10 Brits have seen their relationship fall apart due to their dedication to their jobs and nearly a quarter admit having to cancel plans such as date nights and birthdays as a result of it. In fact, three in 10 say they feel like theyâre always at work, even when theyâre at home. Thankfully my job hasnt cost me my marriage but its led to a number of arguments because as you know news never stops something my husband doesnt really get. As a journalist, we get a certain buzz when theres major breaking news, and even better if its a rolling news story, and unless you work in news its probably something you cant understand. Take the news of former South African president Nelson Mandela passing away. It broke at around 9 pm GMT and it was well out of office hours so I was definitely not working and I wasnt even on-call. So imagine the horror on my husbands face when the first thing I did was to call my cousin in Johannesburg to ask him if he was free to do a quick interview about Mandelas death. He agreed, I called the newsroom and there was the start of at least 48 hours of back-to-back coverage of Mandelas passing. I was glued to the rolling 24-hour news channels to soak up as much information I could but my husband was getting increasingly annoyed as I delayed going to bed further and further. Hes died. Thats it. Thats the news. What else do you want to know? he grumbled as he took himself off to bed but in my job, there was still lots to know. I did the same while awaiting the news of the next president of the United States, hoping and praying it wouldnt be Trump by waking up every hour through the night to check the regular updates on the news app and twitter on my phone and again when the EU referendum result was coming in. I was gutted with both results having convinced myself that it would be near impossible for either Trump to be president or for the UK to leave the EU. But something in me just couldnt switch off and its not just the news industry where people cant break free from their jobs. A recent poll found that one in 10 Brits have seen their relationship fall apart due to their dedication to their jobs and nearly a quarter admit having to cancel plans such as date nights and birthdays as a result of it. In fact, three in 10 say they feel like theyâre always at work, even when theyâre at home. Fifty-two percent believe this is linked to new technologies allowing us, for instance, to check emails on our phones. Seven in 10 admit being contacted outside of working hours via either text, email or phone for work-related matters and a quarter go as far as saying they spend more time messaging bosses and colleagues than their own friends. When asked why they put these extra hours, more than half say itâs simply because they have too much work. However, a quarter feel theyâre being pressured by their boss, and an additional 18 percent feel they might lose their job otherwise. Theyâll do things such as checking work emails (23 percent), admin (40 percent) and preparing reports (25 percent) outside of working hours. Sadly its not only our relationships that suffer when we work too much. It can have a huge impact on our health and wellbeing too. Chieu Cao, Co-founder of Perkbox says: These findings serve as a stark reminder about priorities and how new technologies, whilst providing many benefits, are also blurring the lines between our private and professional lives. As employers, we need to start managing people based on their outputs rather than hours worked, leading by example and empowering teams to make their own decisions. Our objective should no longer be keeping employees engaged at work, it should be catering for their entire employee experience, so they feel fulfilled inside and outside of it. So what can you do to leave your work at work? Try not to have work emails on your phone or personal tablet/laptop. Listen to music or watch something on your phone/tablet on your commute home to help you switch off from work-mode. Switch off your work phone or tablet/laptop you cant look at them if theyre not on. Make plans for the evening whether its going for a run, hitting the gym or a date night with your other half and then stick to it. DONT even think about canceling for work! There are times when we do have to work later than our normal hours or indeed bring our work home but as long as its every once in a while and doesnt become the norm then maybe you can enjoy your married life for a lot longer!

How To Maximize Your Yoga or Gym Workout
How To Maximize Your Yoga or Gym Workout So, youve finally made the commitment to really dedicate yourself to yoga or a gym workout routine. More than likely, a major part of that decision was a desire to get your body in better shape. Of course, side benefits are losing a few pounds and the positive emotional effects youll get. If that describes you, read on. Heres our tips to maximize the results of your yoga or gym workout. Remember, before you start this or any rigorous physical training program, you should consult your physician. Preparing Yourself Getting more fit and trim isnt going to happen just by putting in a few random sessions at the gym. Outside the gym, heres whats important: Diet Be sure you match your intake of carbs and protein with the intensity of your workouts. Your body needs to be properly fed and nourished when youre putting new demands on it. And that includes making sure you hydrate properly. Sleep Any time youre putting your body under extra stress, its essential to get enough good quality sleep. And dont try to drag yourself to the gym if you stayed out till 3 in the morning. Youll likely do more harm than good. Clothing and Footwear No, its not a fashion contest. Wearing the right shoes and clothing not only keeps you more comfortable, it protects you from a whole host of injuries. Just as you need the right clothing when you head off a hike, you also need the right clothing in the gym. Supplements Dont be tempted by possible dangerous drugs that promise instant results. But if youre going full-on into a demanding routine, good quality supplements can be both supportive and beneficial. If youâre finding it difficult to manage your calorie intake, then a female fat burner like Leanbean contains a clinically proven dose of Glucomannan to help you manage your cravings. Whilst supplements like Powher take a more holistic approach to brain and body health, by supporting improved energy and reduced cravings as well as better sleep and recovery. At the Gym Once youre inside the gym, heres some things to consider: Get a Coach/Trainer Especially when youre starting out, its worth it to have a professional coaching you as to your personal form and for suggested routines to accomplish your goals. But DONT rely on just their stated certifications when selecting one. Ask around and get recommendations. Warm Up and Stretch Make sure your muscles and joints are ready. Going cold into a rigorous workout is much more likely to result in injury. And be sure to do a post workout stretch, also. Keep A Record Fancy electronics, online monitors, or just a notebook, take time to record your fitness journey. Its great to look back and see how far youve come. Plus, itll help you determine if youre getting the results you want. Get a Gym Buddy If you have the dedication and will power to go it alone, hurrah for you! But if youre like most of us, there will be days when you just dont feel like it. If youve got a commitment to a workout partner, youve got an extra dose of motivation to get out the door. Whether its yoga or the gym, enjoy your fitness journey. The destination is a version of you that youre going to like!

Trust Beats Brains - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career
Trust Beats Brains - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career A recent study showed only 52% of people trust their boss. For a leader, trust works two ways: 1. You need to be trusted so people will choose to follow you. 2. You need to be able to trust people you choose to work with. For a leader to be trusted she or he must consistently instill trust with the individual members of the team. For example when trustworthy leaders decide on something, they make it very clear that they will do what they say. They keep their word. This makes them reliable. If people can count on you to follow through on your stated plans or actions, then youâll be viewed as trustworthy. If you exhibit your trust- worthiness at all timesâ"in front of others, online, and even behind closed doorsâ"people will follow you. co-author of The Leadership Mind Switch (McGraw-Hill, 2017)

5 tips for reinventing the performance-review process
5 tips for reinventing the performance-review process Until recently, performance appraisals were mostly an annual affair, but thatâs changing as human resource (HR) and business leaders look to improve talent management processes to engage and retain top-performing employees. In fact, HR professionals are now tasked with understanding âthe businessâ of the business, which means working collaboratively with leaders at all levels to find ways to get the most out of the organizationâs talent today and in the future. As a result, more and more companies are moving away from annual performance reviews and traditional rating systems and instead looking to adopt something that is more in-tune with the pace of their business â" processes that are far more fluid and agile. This is a good thing, according to Dominique Jones, chief people officer at Halogen Software. Jones has 15 years of HR experience, and I spoke with her recently to get her take on how and why performance management practices are evolving. Here are five take-aways from our conversation: 1. Why old approaches arenât working today Performance management is supposed to improve employee performance all year long, not just once a year. Too often, the traditional approach of annual appraisals doesnât fulfill that basic purpose because it is separate from the daily rhythm of business operations. Changing workforce demographics and technology have influenced the shift to an ongoing approach to performance management. A companyâs talent is its greatest asset and biggest competitive differentiator. With this in mind, it makes sense to adopt a talent management strategy that is more forward-looking and focused on development. But the reality is that weâre not getting rid of annual reviews anytime soon because they still have their place. Whatâs changed is the purpose of annual reviews â" they are no longer one-time events to talk about employee performance. Rather, they offer an opportunity to reflect and summarize relevant activity over the entire year as part of the ongoing performance management process. 2. Next-generation review practices for modern workforces Instead of relying solely on yearly reviews, forward-thinking companies are reinventing performance management activities to be more collaborative, personal, and adaptive, as well as leveraging technology to support managers and employees performing core HR functions. To support the shift toward ongoing performance management, frontline managers are being given the tools and resources to provide continuous feedback and coaching for employees on a regular basis. Itâs important for managers to be able to provide feedback in a timely and meaningful way, so training in this area helps ensure that a culture of feedback is developed properly. Finally, managers can look for opportunities to support employees at various points during the year, such as during regular one-to-one meetings or check-ins, while reviewing progress on goals, after projects are complete, and during career development discussions. 3. Teaching managers to be more effective and inspirational The agile approach to performance management works better for employees and for companies because it keeps employees top-of-mind. If business priorities shift, leaders can ensure employees are aware, and with the right tools available, managers can work with employees to adjust their individual goals to align with the companyâs new direction. It works the same way if goals remain the same. By working together, managers and employees can link staff commitments directly to organization goals. Commitments alone arenât enough, though. Managers need to monitor progress to make sure employees are making headway. Once managers have the resources in place to do that, it becomes simple to provide frequent feedback and make sure employees are consistently meeting expectations. 4. Helping managers become better coaches Itâs trendy to focus on tactics to get the most out of employees within a generational category such as baby boomers, millennials, or Generation Z. With a shift to ongoing performance management, it makes more sense for managers to coach the individual instead. After all, a strong relationship between managers and employees impacts engagement and talent retention. A personalized approach to performance management helps managers establish a trusting relationship with employees. Managers need to understand how to tailor their communication and approach to each member of their team. A personal approach also helps managers replicate the conditions for high performance because they can understand what motivates employees, what makes them tick, and what they need to perform at their very best. 5. HRâs evolving role in supporting business goals Technology is playing a more central role in virtually every business unit, and HR is no exception. HR technology can support better business decisions as it relates to talent management, but only when it is integrated as part of the business rhythm â" not separate from it. Additionally, HR technology provides managers and employees with a central view of all ongoing performance and development activities, and a simpler way to review and revise commitments and development plans and gather and provide feedback across multiple devices (desktop, mobile, and tablet). The bottom line: A more fluid and agile future For all of these reasons, Jones notes that companies are increasingly shifting away from annual performance reviews and traditional rating systems. A more agile business climate and new generations of tech-savvy employees demand new approaches, and thatâs why HR professionals and managers are adopting ongoing review strategies that reflect the pace of business operations. Jones offers a view of the future of the performance review process, and it is more fluid and agile.
